What to Do When Your Car Cuts Out on the Motorway

Imagine what would happen if you were driving down the motorway when all of a sudden, your car cuts out. You're suddenly panicking and don't know what to do or how to fix it. It can be a stressful experience, especially if you have little knowledge about cars and mechanics. But what should you bear in mind if it were to happen to you, and how should you react?

Move to Safety

The first thing to do is to check your mirrors and be aware of all other traffic. If you're in the "fast" lane, you need to indicate and move across to the inside as smoothly as possible and with little delay. Of course, you can only do this based on the position of other vehicles, but always move across as quickly as you can. Then, enter the hard shoulder and pull as far over to the side as you can.

Check Your Fuel Supply

The first thing you should check is your fuel supply. If your car runs out of fuel, then it will cut out — it's as simple as that. Check that there is still plenty of fuel in the tank, and make sure that the petrol cap is securely closed. If this isn't the problem, move on to step two.

Check Your Battery and Alternator

Your battery or alternator may be at fault if your car has cut out unexpectedly on the motorway. If this is the case, try turning off all electrical appliances in your car, such as air conditioning and radios and then turn them back on one by one until you isolate which appliance is draining your battery power. If this doesn't work, proceed to step three.

Evacuate Your Passages

If you're on a busy motorway, the best place for your passengers is off to the side and behind a crash barrier. After all, other drivers are often distracted when in this type of environment, and you'll want to avoid a collision of any kind. Get everyone out from the inside-facing doors before you do anything else.

Call For Assistance

Then, you need to call an emergency towing service. You are best advised to keep their phone number in your device so that you don't have to scramble to try and get a number. These experts will come out to help you as soon as possible and take you and your family to a safe location.
